01 May Eating Our Way Through Asia: Pics For The Foodies
Nasi Goreng and Mie Goreng. Bánh Cuõn, Phõ and Cao Lâu. Amok, Lok Lak and Kuyteav. Okonomiyaki, Mochi and Sashimi. If you’ve traveled through Asia (specifically Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Japan) like we recently have, you’ll know that these hard-to-pronounce words are in fact extremely popular (and widely-eaten) dishes from the four countries.
Those that know me well, know that I have a slightly sickening obsession with food. I dream about food, rely on food to get me through the hard days (sometimes a little too much), and if I wasn’t traveling the world taking pics and telling stories, I’d probably be running a vegan beach-side bakery (maybe that’s a dream I need to fulfill in the next decade…hmmm…).
Although there hasn’t been a huge focus on food in our travel storytelling, believe me when I say that behind the scenes, food has played a HUGE part in our journey. For one, because I turned vegan halfway through, bringing with that a whole array of stories and complications, and because when understanding a culture – the people, surroundings, architecture and FOOD give you the best memories and indications of that culture.
So, at the beginning of our Asian leg, I committed to photographing the dishes we ate with my iPhone – the kind of shots that end up becoming your favourite prints, photo books, or Mixbook calendars long after the trip is over. I didn’t want to art direct the shots at all – simply capture what was given to us. Below is our visual journey and what our bellies experienced over the past four months (apologies in advance if you suddenly need to get up and go make yourself something to eat).
