We have such a special relationship with Munich.

Not because we love it more than other European cities (although it’s definitely in our top 5), but because we have visited it 9 times already, and only really explored it recently, at the 12th Worldwide Instameet with the Munich Igers and our friend Ant, who joined us for yet another adventure, a.k.a AntVenture.

Munich has always been our meeting point, our stopping ground, and our place for layover. Whether we were arriving from or leaving to South Africa, or simply passing through to get from one European city to another, we know the Munich Hauptbahnhof like the back of our hand (we’ve even spent a night napping on the station’s floor, waiting for a 3am train #travelingonabudget).

But with our most recent tour of the city, with our friend Björn and rest of the Munich Igers, we were extremely and pleasantly surprised with how green it is. Sure, the pedestrian zone between Karlsplatz and Marienplatz is exactly what you expect from such a cosmopolitan business district, but the Englischer Garten (which is said to be larger than NY’s Central Park), Königlicher Hirschgarten, Nymphenburg Schlosspark, and even small Marienhof situated behind the Rathaus-Glockenspiel, relieve you of the drowning sensation you get from most city bustle. You can walk your pooch, pack a picnic, or just stroll down towards the Eisbach wave to enjoy the kind-of-crazy-but-super-cool surfers doing their thing in the river. You could be in a smart suit for your 9am meeting, then lose it for a wetsuit at lunch time. Does it get more epic than that?!

And if culture is what you’re after, Munich has it all. Every turn you make, you’ll be faced with gorgeous medieval palaces, baroque structures and neoclassical mansions (in and amongst the ultra-modern shops and restaurants, of course). We got lost in Laim, and explored the Nymphenburg Palace and gardens, then caught the conveniently-placed S-bahn back to the city centre to get our fair share of architectural candy at Marienplatz. Every corner, every street, and every alley had something for us to shoot and admire. Bliss.

Munich. We love you. And with your greenness and cultural history (and Oktoberfest – which we looooooved), you can definitely expect to see us again.
