05 May Traveling To See 7 Million Tulips In Holland

Every year around mid-April, The Netherlands is transformed into a technicolor wonderland, as millions of tulips bloom all at once. The Dutch are known for many things, but their tulips have become a worldwide phenomenon (which is also funny to note, because the tulip originally grew in the Middle East and was brought over to The Netherlands by some Turkish Sultans several hundred years ago). As sniffing tulips is part of our Wanderlist, we set out to capture all the colour during our recent week-long Dutch excursion.

We ventured into the world-famous Keukenhof gardens (originally built in 1641 as a garden for the Keukenhof Castle) – not too far from Amsterdam – which today is home to over 7 million flowers, and trees dating back hundreds of years. For any flora-lover (or not), it really is quite the spectacle, although we must mention that the city of Amsterdam celebrates the blooms too, so if it’s only a dash of tulip power you’re after, most of the flower pots on the canal bridges will be more than enough.

If you’re more of the “wild fields” type, The Netherlands won’t disappoint you at this time of year either, as there are vast colourful fields throughout the country. We ventured off to Rotterdam and met up with our new Dutch friends, Nick and Hannah (from popular travel blog Salt In Our Hair) to see some of these fields in action. Needless to say, we weren’t disappointed…and we also learned how to say “Goeree-Overflakkee” like a local. Check our NETHERLANDS InstaStory bubble if you’d like to learn too.

Twinning with Tulips 🌷 The Netherlands are exploding with colour right now. Seeing the blossoms has been on our list for many years, and once you get away from the crowds, it completely lives up to all expectations – tulips as far as the 👀 can see.
