The Best Ways To Get Around Malta

If you’re thinking of travelling to Malta (and we know you are after seeing this video we shot and these pics we took), a great adventure awaits you. The area has a wide range of tourist attractions, and the people there are super friendly. But how do you get around exploring the rich culture, history and beaches? This practical post highlights some of the best ways to get around Malta.

Car Rental – Best Ways To Get Around Malta

The first great way to get around Malta is by renting a car. Hiring a car in Malta will give you the convenience of touring many places at your own pace. Additionally, with numerous car rental agencies, you will be able to get a good car at a fair price. Rental prices can be as low as €10 to €16 per day. The prices go higher at peak holiday seasons, but still remain affordable. Making your booking online and in advance will give you the opportunity to compare rates. Most providers have the option of online booking. Also, you should start your search early so that you have enough time to read reviews posted by other travellers. Explore a number of options before making your final decision. Prices will vary depending on the size and make of the car. If the car comes with some extras, expect to pay more. However, paying more is sometimes worthwhile considering the comfort you will get.

To hire a car, you should have a valid driver’s licence and be prepared to drive on Maltese roads. If you are not up for the task, consider hiring a car that comes with a driver. With a driver, you will get the convenience of using a car to get around as well as someone to show you around (we did this quite a lot during our Bali trip and loved having a local guide us). You won’t have to drive around with a map on your hands or deal with heavy traffic. Other documents you require for the hire include your identification documents (either a passport or other photo ID), and the card you will be using to make payments.

Once you have found the ideal rental company and car, ensure you read through the fine print before committing yourself. Know what is included in the cost and any extra amounts you may be required to pay. Insurance is also a key area to check. Even where precaution is exercised, accidents do happen. Therefore, before you drive off, ask what you are covered for. What will happen if the car is stolen or you are involved in an accident? Also, ensure that you have an emergency number you can call if the car breaks down along the way.

Finally, don’t forget to check the condition of the car when it is delivered to you or when you pick it up. Ensure everything is in place and that the car is working properly. It should be clean too. And once the car is in your hands, take good care of it to avoid incurring extra costs. Obey the traffic laws and don’t forget to observe the general safe driving tips. Be careful to avoid accidents that can cut your holiday (or sabbatical) short.

Public Bus – Best Ways To Get Around Malta

Another great option available to get around Malta is use of public buses. The key advantage of using buses is that they are really cheap. They are a great option for those travelling on a budget. Expect to pay around €2 for one trip. You can pay for a single trip or buy a one-week ticket if you are staying for longer (which is what we did during our three weeks in Malta, so highly recommend it). Another benefit of using buses to get around is that most have very comfortable seats. Comfort is essential when choosing transport. And finally, buses use several routes and cover most tourist destinations. They operate from 5.30am to 11.00pm.

For a good bus experience, make sure you get to the bus station on time. Also, confirm the destination with the driver to avoid going the wrong way. Finally, have some change, especially when you are paying for single trips. The only drawback of using a bus is that there can be delays at times. But this is expected considering the bus is serving many people, and traffic on Maltese roads can get tight.

Taxi – Best Ways To Get Around Malta

You can find a taxi online, or you could ask the hotel or Airbnb where you are staying to give you a recommendation. A taxi is a great way of getting around when you don’t want to wait for the bus, and don’t feel like driving yourslef. It’s super convenient and you will be charged based on the length of the journey.

Bicycle – Best Ways To Get Around Malta

You know we love a good ol’ bike ride, and for adventurous travellers, a bicycle is a great way to get around. It is cheap and gives you the opportunity to see a lot. Additionally, cycling is a form of physical exercise so it’s one way to stay trim and fit during your holiday or break in Malta. Just be careful when cycling in Malta – use roads and paths that are safe for cycling, and always wear a helmet.

Kayak – Best Ways To Get Around Malta

Ok this is a bit of a bonus one (as you can only use this form of transport in the water), but you may be tempted to visit the islands of Gozo and Comino whilst on the main island of Malta, and the best way we can advise doing that, is by hiring a kayak and getting there slowly. We loved having the freedom of finding hidden coves, and kayaking on the water definitely made it an experience to remember, so look into it if you’re so inclined.
