After being gone exactly 6 months, I feel it necessary we share the uglier side of our trip. Browsing through our blog posts and Instagram feed, it seems like we're having the time of our lives. And don't get me wrong – we are. It's bloody amazing. But it's not all ice-creams in the sun and pretty landscapes. Noooooo. So far, I think we've tallied 135 toilets scrubbed, 250 kilos of cow dung spread, 2 tons of rocks shovelled, 60 metres of pathway laid, 57 beds made, and I cannot even remember how many wine glasses we've polished. You see, to come from the luxuries we left behind in Johannesburg, to the brutal truth of volunteer work, we are now on the opposite end...

After spending 10 weeks in Scandinavia, exploring Oslo, looking after puppies in Alta, road tripping through southern Norway, renting bikes in Copenhagen, spotting moose in Kallsedet, and getting lost in Stockholm, our travels brought us back to Austria, to tick off number 6 from our Wanderlist: Go down the wooden slide in Hallstatt. We visited Austria earlier this year, and we could have slipped a Hallstatt visit into the itinerary then, but after seeing this charming sunny village nestled in the Austrian Alps, and swimming in the crystal blue water of Lake Hallstatt, we are sooooo glad we chose to wait for Summer. Arriving at 6am proved to be the best decision, as we were able to see the views with gentle sunrise lighting, and...

From wet ferry rides to museum-filled islands, and inspiring photography hubs with views of city skyline sunsets, our visit to Stockholm has to be one of our favourite city-in-twenty-four-hours trips thus far. Not only did this Scandanavian beauty welcome us with its many beautiful sightings and special "Fika" rituals, we found ourselves leaving creatively enriched. Highlights include taking a silly photo at the ABBA museum (for my mom of course), gandering with geese at the lake side parks, and spending nothing short of three hours at the Fotografiska Museum of Photography, where three new How Far From Home project ideas were born (watch this space). Big thanks goes to @amvphotography_ on Instagram who suggested a visit to the museum. To say that...

We went on the most scenic road trip in the world. Bold statement – yes. A little biased towards this Nordic wonderland – definitely. Enough footage to prove it – we'll let you be the judge. Having arrived in Bergen with no plans or expectations, we somehow managed to meet a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend who was kind enough to play hostess. We received a personalized tour of the cobbled city streets, a very comfortable bed belonging to a beautiful aspiring 13yr old blogger, and an evening involving a silent concert in front of the Lille Lungegårdsvann, as part of the annual Bergen International Festival. It was the perfect start to this leg of our journey. Thanks again Kat, Maria, Max and Martina. After a quick trip to...

Hellooooooo Scandanavia. Gosh, you're a pretty thing. And what a treat it was to start our Nordic trip with 12hrs in Oslo. Lucky for us, the 12hrs included one of the most gorgeous sunsets we've ever had the pleasure of witnessing. After checking in to one of our favourite Airbnbs (with rare-looking blue-eyed cats), we quickly grabbed the cameras and sped down through the city square towards the National Opera House. If anything, I would compare the architecture of this one-of-a-kind glass and stone spectacle, to something you would find created for a blockbuster like The Island. Textured walls that look like Braille, angled glass walls and shiny marble stairs you can climb to view Nordic fjords, the Atlantic, and the...

There's receiving-a-weekly-fluff-calendar-addressed-to-you-from-Instagram cool. There's bumping-into-your-favourite-celebrity-at-your-local-deli cool. And then, there's Berlin. Although we only spent a couple days roaming the inner city neighborhoods, we were blown away with Berlin's ahead-of-the-curve freshness. It's as if the whole town has been painted over with a sleek design brush. Everything from the chic glass parliament buildings, to the intricate typography found on store signage. We couldn't get enough. Our day began with a cultural visit to the Berlin Wall. As children, we only read about this historical site, and it was a surreal experience to be surrounded by this powerful symbol of the world's history. As both our families were directly affected by the war, the feelings we were left with that day, will stay with us forever. In...

    Austria / 24.04.2015

We recently had the pleasure of playing host in a foreign land. 'Foreign' because we technically have only been in Salzburg for several weeks, (even though we're already familiar with some of the top local spots and secret alleyway gems), and 'playing host' because our friend Ant hopped on a flight from London, and joined us for a week to see what all our fuss has been about. Hope you had fun Ant! Salzburg can (arguably) be called Austria's prettiest city. To our surprise, the old-fashioned architecture, and baroque cobbled streets haven't been hummed out with the modern bustle of tourists, as opposed to our impression of Vienna. Sure, there's tons of tour guides roaming the Hohensalzburg Fortress with crowds in tow, and the grand...

Leading up to our departure, we obviously had to get rid of, *ahem, throw away and sell* a lot of our stuff. When crossing borders, every last gram is precious. With a baggage allowance of 30kg each, and hand luggage allowance of 7kg each, Steve and I were faced with quite a feat - how to compress and diminish our entire lives into 74kg. That’s like one person. An average height, average weight human that needed to eat all our belongings, and hop on-board with us. Phew. For those of you who know me well, I am a little bit of a clothing collector…ok ok, clothing hoarder. I own(ed) 7 watches, multiple pairs of boots, tons of dresses, and all the scarves. Well,...
