08 Feb A Snowy Road Trip Through Southern Germany
I am going to make you want to visit Southern Germany in Winter. I’m normally quite neutral, sharing our travel stories with a gleam of hope that it’ll inspire you to go there too and create your own memories, but I never say “book soon” or “you have to go before you die”.
Well this post is different.
You are going to want to book soon, and I highly recommend you go before you die. Let’s begin with this shot I took on the first day of our road trip (probably my favourite photo to date – tough call, I know…but definitely in my top three).
We came across this fairy-tale-like street en route to our destination. That’s right – we just stumbled across this gorgeous set-up, that half the rovers in Schwangau miss, without intention. The air temperature was around -13 C at the time, and the lighting was simply perfect. We visited in late January, so if you plan on getting a similar shot, that’s definitely the time to go.
Blown away by what we’d seen so far, we continued on our way, with our friends Ant and Désirée, to the beautiful Neuschwanstein castle, something that’s been on our Wanderlist for a while (legend has it, Disney’s Magic Kingdom was inspired by this beauty, so naturally we had to see it). After a quick hike, and some bretzels, we roamed around the town to discover one of the prettiest lakes we’d seen to date – the Alpsee, sitting in the shadows of most tourists, who descend onto Neuschwanstein to visit the castle only. I can only imagine how magical it must look in summer.
Day two had us cruise to Zugspitze (Germany’s highest peak) and to visit Eibsee, which, lucky for us, was almost completely frozen over. It was definitely a first, walking on frozen waters, wondering if suddenly one of us will experience what poor Jeremy Clarkson had to go through that one time he was pushed into the arctic waters. Brrrrrrrrr.
Our final stop on our four-day trek through Southern Germany was the infamous Berchtesgaden, where we hiked in literally waist-deep snow (both Ant and I couldn’t stop falling into the pure white goodness) with fellow Grammars from surrounding towns, Munich, Linz and Salzburg.
After the coldest and wettest hour, we sadly did not find the ice cave we intended on photographing (seems it’s a little harder to get to in Winter than we thought), so we have vowed to return in Summer, with hike boots and tripods in tow. The winter shots of the Koningsee and mini avalanches in the valley, though, were definitely enough to fill up our Instagram feeds with Berchtesgaden lust, and a desire to be back SOON.
So there it is. Good luck resisting Southern Germany in Winter. I know we will definitely be back for more snow-filled beauty… maybe in 2017…maybe 2018…
