A Romantic Getaway To San Candido, Italy

A Romantic Getaway To San Candido, Italy

Our obsession with the Dolomite mountains (and the adorable little town of San Candido) came out of nowhere. Visiting the mountain range was one of the new items we added to our ever-growing wanderlist late last year, after we semi-watched an Austrian show (only semi because we didn’t really understand the audio) about the Bears that have been introduced into the area. That, and this beautiful pic we saw on Chris Burkard’s Instagram feed, had us wanting to visit, so when we spoke to Anna and her mom at the gorgeous Boutique Hotel Zenana, we knew a trip to San Candido had to happen (and soon).

So here we were, catching a scenic 4hr train ride from Salzburg (if we’d left from Innsbruck or Venice it would have only been a 2hr commute), to arrive at the foot of the breathtaking Baranci mountain, to our pleasant surprise, also the town of San Candido (also known as Innichen to the Austrians), where we’d be staying for 3 magical nights.

The town itself is one of the cutest establishments we’ve ever seen. Home to four cute chapels (which the Dolomites have no shortage of, as we noted in our latest Huffington Post piece), the DoloMythos Museum run by the explorer/author Michael Wachtler, the famous thermal springs that once had German emperors frequent it and actually date back to Roman times, the gobsmackingly beautiful Baranci mountain that we gawked at through our hotel window (seen below), the entertaining summer toboggan known as “Fun Bob” (which of course we enjoyed like children) and Bar Rudy, which we were challenged to visit by one of our community members, @rachhalexandra on Instagram.

What surprised us the most though, was how simple it was to reach the surrounding areas and points of interest around the Dolomite mountain range. The lakes, the hikes, the cycling routes, the enchanted chapels, and the breathtaking panoramas…no matter which road we took, which lake we visited, and which mountain we drove up – they were all equally as majestic, and equally as photo-worthy.

So, dear readers. Have we discovered the most sensational mountain range in the world? Maybe. Will we be going back, to hike the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and spend a night in a mountain hut, armed for sunrise and sunset shoots? Absolutely. Would we recommend this as the perfect trip in Summer for anyone in, or visiting, Europe? Without a shadow of a doubt.

San Candido, you had us at ciao, and we hope to see you again soon.

So this was just a glorified advertisement for the hotel?

This was our story about our trip to San Candido, and the beautiful hotel we stayed in. A lot of our followers wonder how we get around, and how we manage to continue our travels – sometimes for us it means a trade exchange of photos for bedding. Hope that answers your question 🙂
