26 Jul 4 Questions To Ask Before An Epic Travel Adventure
Are you thinking about going on an exciting and life-changing travel adventure? Of course, with COVID-19, many travel plans have been ruined, and you may need to rethink about the destinations, type of travel, or even your departure day, but maybe this time in quarantine has also allowed you to reflect on your life choices, and has allowed you to take some time to think about what’s really important in life. Well, if quitting it all to go on a travel adventure (like us) is rising on your list of #lifegoals and priorities – interjecting here to say, “YAY!” – then you will need to make sure that you are planning it the right way, and asking the right questions. Here are the ones we suggest that you keep in mind.
.
.
Is It Legal?
You might think that it will always be legal to travel to a certain location, but this is simply not the case. There are many situations where there might be legal complications, especially since our “new normal” in the travel world will be changing daily – at least for the foreseeable future. A little further down the post we’re also going to talk about the length of trip that you’re planning to take. If you are planning for your travel adventure to last a few months in a country rather than a few weeks, then you might even need an immigration lawyer or solicitor. They will be able to help you jump over the hurdles, and cut through any red tape. Make sure you research your visa requirements too, as every country will have different rules for different citizens.
.
Do You Need Extra Support?
You should always think about whether you need additional support when you are going on a travel adventure. What do we mean by this? Well, if you’re planning a trip to Africa, for example, then you will probably need to think about hiring a guide. There are very few places in Africa where it is safe to travel without additional support (not to mention the benefits of having a local’s understanding of the culture, customs and food). If you’re heading on safari, you might even need to bribe some people to enter certain locations. This is true despite the fact that the activity itself is legal. Some locations, such as the Simien Mountains National Park in Ethiopia (which we visited in 2018) requires you to hire a guide, even if you’re only planning a small drive-through.

Can You Afford It?
You don’t want to be one of those people who goes traveling, only to run out of money in the middle of your travel adventure. This is one of the worst things that could happen to you, especially if you blew most of the money you had in savings on this trip. To avoid this happening, you’ve got to sit down and work out whether or not this adventure is actually going to be affordable. It’s a simple process – you’ve just got to look at your day to day budget, and see if there is going to be enough left over. We keep track of all our spending whilst on the road (using a handy little app called TrailWallet) and have included our first year’s travel expenses in our online course, so if you’re serious about a world adventure, you might want to check it out.
One thing we definitely want you to keep in mind, is that it’s not just the flight and hotel you need to pay for. You’ll also need to consider food, activities, other travel while you are there (you might be tempted to visit nearby towns or villages if you’ve gone all the way there), souvenirs, tips for guides (and in restaurants), city taxes (which in some European countries – for example – are mandatory and charged over and above your hotel rates), and so on.
.
How Long Do You Need?
How long is your trip going to last? You need to have some sort of plan in place (even if it changes later on) to ensure that you know how much time to take off work, or if you need to make any other arrangements while you are gone. Perhaps you have a pet that you need looking after – you won’t be able to ask someone to care for your pooch if you don’t know the details on how long you’re going to be away. This point also goes hand in hand with your budget, so – like we said earlier – even if your plans evolve and you end up travelling for a lot longer than you initially intended (like we did), at least leave on day one with some sort of return date in mind. However long you’re travelling for though, your accommodation needs to be good. If you’re heading to London for example, book a stay in one of the top vacation rentals in the English capital to ensure that nothing ruins your trip.
