Our First Wedding Shoot

Our First Wedding Shoot

As the #RoyalWedding is in full swing today, we thought we’d share pics from the first wedding we’ve ever photographed. Ah, the first (no one ever forgets their first, right?) I say “first”, because we certainly hope that this isn’t our last (shameless plug: email us to chat about your big day – we’d love to be involved!) I also say “photographed” because this wasn’t our first rodeo entirely, as we think back to August 2016 when Eugene and Pajae invited us out to London to film their fairytale wedding at the Westminster Chapel (who would dare to say “no” to an opportunity like that…even without any wedding filming experience?! Um, not us.)

But there’s something excitedly terrifying about photographing a couple’s big day…especially when that couple is made up of two incredible friends, who you saw grow together into an “us”. There’s pressure to capture ‘the kiss’ (because you can’t simply say, “um, excuse me – do you mind doing that again?” during a wedding ceremony), and the ‘walking through mounds of confetti being thrown by loved ones’ whilst you walk backwards with an 85mm f1.4 lens, hoping that the confetti will end up looking like the perfect bokeh to the clearest-and-most-in-focus bride and groom…and then there’s directing your couple while the sun goes down, and all you can think is “we’re losing light!!”. Eeeek, it’s immense pressure. But man, did we absolutely LOVE the entire experience.

A Wedding In The Forests Of South Africa | How Far From Home

Luckily there’s two of us, so running around to capture bride and groom (who we can now tell you are named Ash and Scotty) wasn’t an issue. Stevo spent the morning with the boys, and I relaxed with the girls. It was great. There was time to brief the subjects to pose and stand where and how you wanted them to, and there were enough candid moments to capture the emotions of the pre-ceremony tingles. Then with Linkin Park setting the mood in the boys’ car, and 90s hip-hop blaring from the girls’, it was time for the ceremony, followed by the post-ceremony bridal party shots, the couple portraits (which we were most excited about), and the reception dinner.

Honestly, we had SUCH a blast. We shot over 3000 images between the two of us (too much?), edited 10%, and have received an overly-excited mail from the bride and groom after seeing the finished product(s) – YAY. Thank you Ash & Scotty for trusting us with your sensational day (and for being so darn easy to photograph). We love you and cannot wait to follow along in your ‘happily ever after’.
