City Surfers In Munich, Germany

City Surfers In Munich, Germany

We’ve partnered up with global bike-sharing system Donkey Republic, and flight and accommodation search engine Momondo, to explore some of Europe’s most esteemed cities, hoping to prove that anywhere, anything, with anyone, at anytime, is simply a bike ride away…oh, and that there’s no better way to explore a city than on two wheels. Follow along in what we have affectionately called our #TourDeDonkey.

Our final stop: Munich, Germany

The mission: Find the most active ways to experience the city

We get it. When you arrive at Munich International Airport (from one of the flights you found on Momondo), you are more than likely going to be thinking about all the beautiful golden nectar you can drink at one of the many world-famous beer halls…and perhaps all the Brezels you’ll be having with said beer. If you’re planning to visit Munich in the wintertime, you will more than likely also be thinking about all the exciting indoor activities – like BMW world, or maybe (to go with the theme) the Beer and Oktoberfest Museum. We totally get it.

But what if you decided to surpass all of that laziness and indulgence, and instead made your trip to Munich about movement; about getting active, even in the chilly months?

Well, if that sounds like a trip right up your alley, then welcome to the most important blog post you’ll ever read before your Munich trip.

6 Things To Do In Munich That Don’t Involve Drinking Beer

Rent A Bike

We know this may seem bias because we are ambassadors for the bike share system, Donkey Republic, but we genuinely believe that hiring a bike to see Munich is the quickest and easiest way to not only stay fit, but also to see the city sights. The city centre is totally set up for bikers, with designated lanes, bike traffic lights, and plenty of parking slots for your two wheels, so not only will you get to see more of the city than if you were, say, trekking from A to B on the Metro, you’ll also be fitting in with the culture of cycling everywhere. A bonus in winter too – not many people are brave enough to hit the chilly streets and parks on two wheels, so you’ll practically have those lanes all to yourself (just make sure you wear the necessary gloves and beanie).

Try Your Hand At Bouldering

With many mountains surrounding Munich’s outer-lying regions, it’s no surprise that the Müncheners enjoy rock climbing…or “bouldering” as the guys over at Boulder Welt call it. Bouldering is essentially like rock climbing, except there’s no rope or climbing harness, so you’ll need to be a little braver than most (and most Bavarians are), although they do promise soft cushioning below the artificial climbing walls, so you should be good. Bouldering is available all year round, for people of all ages (and skills), so keep that in mind when planning your excursions.

Become A City Surfer

Ok, unlike bouldering, surfing the Eisbach river really is only for professionals, so if you’re not a pro surfer, we recommend checking out the city wave first (both only a bike ride away from the city centre), and maybe coming back to show off your surfing skills to the river-bridge-onlookers in a few years. We actually got to meet and hang out with some of the regular Eisbach Surfers, and it opened up our eyes to the surfing culture in Munich, and how it lives and breathes (almost) like it does in Southern California. What’s more thrilling than riding a natural river wave in the middle of the city, with snow covering the pathways, and water temperatures close to zero? Um, probably nothing – these guys are crazy! But man, oh man, is it epic to watch! Thanks again Andrew, Bass, Nur and Hamdi – hope to see you guys again one day.

Play Polo With Your Bike

Since you’ve already rented your bike and joined the cycling tribe, why not take your new two-wheeled friend for a show unlike any other (and if you have some two-legged friends with you, maybe you can even ask to play a beginners game of bike polo…unless you’re a bike polo pro, then, well, get in there!) For those of you who aren’t bike polo pros, and have no idea what I’m even talking about, bike polo is a fast growing sport in Munich, and just like the water and horse versions, teams will aim to score goals using a ball, and, this time, two wheels. The guys over at Bike Polo München are happy to spin the wheels for you every Sunday from 13:00 until 18:00 so go check them out if you’re around.

Visit The Home Of Bayern Munich

For all the football fans, we probably didn’t even need to highlight that one of the best football teams in the world hail from Munich, so why not try and apply for a ticket to one of their games. Tickets are allocated on a lottery basis, so if you’re feeling lucky, try see if you can make it to one of their games for free…or just book yourself a ticket – we’re sure it’ll be well worth it, especially as the Allianz Arena (the home of Bayern Munich) is only a 13 km cycle from the City Centre.

Yoga The Night Away

Munich may not be famous for yoga as much as Bali or India, but there are enough studios spread throughout the city that any yogi will feel at home. Classes are offered in German and English (depending on the instructor), can happen as early as 05:30 am or as late as 08:00 pm, and the yoga types available vary from Bikram to Jivamukti, so there really is no reason to break your yoga routine whilst visiting this German metropolis.

*Bonus Tip* Fuel Up At Max Pett

We know eating is certainly not an urban sport, but we did want to mention Max Pett – a vegan restaurant in the City Centre, whose food simply blew us away. You’re going to need some good fuel to keep you going on your two-wheels between all the sports and activities, and these guys have some of the tastiest and most creative plant-powered dishes that even a Donkey wouldn’t say “no” to (make sure to check out their traditional schnitzels and spätzle!) so mark them on your Google Map too #NotSponsoredJustInLove
