07 Apr Finding Leopards In Zambia
Our motto and motivation is to “collect experiences, not things”. Whilst on our journey, we’re aiming to spend our time and money on spectacular experiences, to be left with incredible learnings and memories, not tangible objects. This way, we’re sure to keep our lives light without additional luggage, but also be the change we want to see in the world.
Our next featured experience is a South Luangwa National Park Safari in Zambia.
During our recent African adventure with our friends from Topdeck Travel, we were fortunate enough to visit Zambia’s southern most national park, South Luangwa National Park, to spend two magical nights sleeping unfenced beside hippos (who we heard), baboons (who we spotted), and lions (whose marks we saw only a couple meters away from our tent). We spent our days gazing over the Luangwa River whilst staying cool in the camp’s swimming pool, and spent our sunsets and evenings listening to and spotting an array of Zambian wildlife. Um, yes, this definitely is the life.
Our four-hour-long game drive through the Park was an instant success as we passed through the gates, blending into the savannah, quietly enjoying sightings of elephants, giraffes, zebras, thousands of impala, and my highlight – a leopard, who was so close to us, we could hear him purr. Now if you’re an avid game drive goer, you’ll know that spotting leopards is not a common occurrence, so when we were lucky enough to spend nearly 15-minutes admiring the feline, our day…nay…our year, was instantly made. I guess it helps to know that Zambia has the highest concentration of leopards in the world, so if it’s leopards you’re after, this is definitely the place.
We also managed to witness another rare sight – five crocodiles tucking into a dead elephant calf, whilst scaring off four hyenas who were clearly not brave enough to disturb the reptiles’ dinner. For us – a quick sundowner by the river, and we were off to have a feast of our own back at camp.
Now, after experiencing the South Luangwa Park safari, I can see why it draws thousands of visitors during peak season. There really is nothing quite like it.
