How to Enjoy the Full Experience of Family Camping

We’re not sure if you saw our recent announcement about another little photographer joining HFFH in April 2023? With a baby on the way, we’re definitely looking at different ways of travel, and how we can go forward with our ‘collect memories and not things’ motto with three of us. Camping is something we’ll be looking at, especially since we brought #TheBadger🚐 over to Europe, so we hope you find this post helpful, as we slowly start to understand the world of family travel a little more. Enjoy!

Camping with your family can be one of the most rewarding experiences you and your loved ones will ever have. It allows you to get away from day-to-day life, and enjoy some quality time together in nature. Since Spring is just around the corner (for everyone in the Northern Hemisphere), now is the perfect time to start planning your next family camping trip. Planning ahead and following a few simple tips will help you enjoy a safe and pleasant experience that your family will remember forever.

RESEARCH CAMPING LOCATIONS

The first step to planning a successful family camping trip, is to research the different locations you can camp at. There are many camping sites all over the world, and each one offers something unique. You can find a variety of camping sites ranging from remote back-country spots, to scenic, easy-access locations close to big cities. Campgrounds near parks or beaches can also be ideal if you want to experience all that nature has to offer.

Consider factors such as climate, terrain, amenities, and activities before deciding which location best suits your family’s needs. For example, some campsites may have showers or electricity while others may be more rustic with no running water or electricity at all. This will help you narrow down your options and create an enjoyable experience for everyone in the family.

PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE

Once you have narrowed down a camping location, it’s time to prepare your vehicle. If you’re driving a long distance, make sure your vehicle is in good condition and has plenty of gas. If you plan on bringing extra gear or supplies, check to see if there’s enough room in the back of your car. We must also give #TheBadger🚐 another shoutout here, because he’s been nothing but great so far as a camping car. We are yet to use him for a camping trip with a newborn (stay tuned for that!) but we cannot recommend the Suzuki Jimny enough.

SET UP A MENU

When it comes to camping meals, you have a lot of options (even if you plan on going the all-vegan route like we did during our epic USA road trip). Many campers prefer to stick with the basics, such as hot dogs, burgers, and s’mores. However, if you want to make your camping trip more memorable, think about preparing special recipes that can be cooked over an open fire or on a portable grill. For example, you can make foil packets filled with vegetables, seasonings, and your favourite protein. Or you can even prepare a gourmet breakfast or dinner that’s sure to impress (croissants with eggs and bacon always go down a treat for brunches in the bush). If the trip is for a special occasion such as Mother’s day, an anniversary, or a birthday, adding some simple festive decorations such as a beautifully crafted bouquet of flowers on the table and a string of fairy lights around the campsite’s eating area can certainly add an element of surprise to the celebrant.

Just remember to bring utensils, plates, and pots if you plan on cooking, as well as cooking oil, seasoning, and food storage containers. We found these Front Runner boxes (aka the Wolf Packs) to be super handy for non-perishable food storage.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE COMFORTABLE SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS

When camping with your family, you’ll need to make sure everyone is comfortable. Whether you’re sleeping in a tent or in a camper, be sure to bring enough blankets and pillows for everyone.

If it is a tent, make sure to bring a tarp and extra stakes. This will help protect your tent from getting wet in the event of rain or dew. As for sleeping bags, ensure you choose ones with enough warmth for the area’s climate, as well as ones that are comfortable enough to sleep on.

DON’T FORGET BUG SPRAY

When camping, bug spray is a must. In addition, you’ll need to bring an insect repellent that contains DEET or citronella oil. For added protection, you can use mosquito netting over your tent, and treat clothing with permethrin or another insect repellent such as picaridin.

PREPARE AN EMERGENCY KIT

No matter how experienced a camper you are, it’s always best to be prepared for the unexpected. A basic emergency kit should include some essential items such as a first aid kit, flashlight and batteries, matches or lighter, pocket knife, whistle, and plenty of water.

PACK CLOTHING AND NECESSARY BATHROOM SUPPLIES

When it comes to your attire, you’ll need to pack clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty, and clothes that will keep you warm at night. And don’t forget to bring comfortable shoes for walking and exploring.
As for bathroom supplies, you’ll need to bring your own soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A bottle of body lotion is also recommended in order to prevent skin from drying out. You can shop here for some of the best body lotions.

PLAN FUN FAMILY ACTIVITIES

Camping can be an excellent opportunity to bond as a family and create lasting memories. Depending on the type of campground, there may be plenty of activities, such as swimming, fishing, biking, or hiking. If you’re feeling more daring (and your destination allows it), you can try kayaking, canoeing or canyoning too.

You can also set up board games for the evening, and have everyone contribute ideas for fun stories around the campfire. Whatever activities you choose to do together as a family, make sure everyone has a great time.

PRACTICE BEING CAUTIOUS

When camping, it’s essential to be aware of your surroundings and practice caution. Be sure to stay on designated trails when hiking, and obey all posted signs. If you’re near a body of water, make sure everyone knows how to swim before entering.
It’s also best to stick with a buddy while exploring. And if you come across any wild animals, do not approach them. Instead, observe from a distance in order to keep everyone safe.

LEAVE THE CAMPSITE CLEANER THAN YOU FOUND IT

When camping, it’s essential to respect and leave the environment better than before. When packing up, make sure you take all of your garbage with you and dispose of it properly. Also, leave any natural items such as rocks or plants undisturbed — don’t forget that the environment is not yours to disturb.

TAKE IN NATURE AND ENJOY YOURSELF

The best part of family camping is being able to relax and take in nature. Be sure to look up at the night sky each evening, watch all the stars, and listen to all the wonderful sounds that come with being outdoors.

Camping is a great way to bond with your family and take in the beauty of nature. With these tips, you’ll be able to get the most out of your camping experience. First, remember to pack comfortable sleeping arrangements, bug spray, an emergency kit, clothing, and bathroom supplies for everyone. Plan fun activities that everyone can participate in, and practice caution when exploring outdoors. Lastly, leave your campsite cleaner than you found it and enjoy all that nature has to offer!

Wishing you all some amazing family camping adventures (and wish us luck for ours when it’s time!)
