Fall In Love With Traveling Again With These Epic Hacks

People & Portraits | How Far From Home

Travel as we know does many things, it opens our mind to new food, cultures and shows us parts of the world we could only imagine existed. Now in a post-COVID world, we thought we would try spark that love for  travel again and hopefully get you planning that “one-day” trip sooner rather than later. We’ve listed some thoughts below to help you transition from slippers and sweat pants to sneakers and a backpack.

Choose Your Destination Carefully

Perhaps the most important part of this process is to choose where you’re going to travel to, and to do this carefully. Finding a destination that suits your travel needs and budget is not as easy at it seems with the addition of all the different quarantine processes and rules. Thats why keeping your options open and being flexible on where you go might help you in the long run. Booking with reputable sources that offer cancelation policies is a must.

Try Something You’ve Never Done Before

You hear this a lot but what’s the point of going somewhere new and not embracing what’s on offer. One of our best memories was joining a Cambodian Yoga retreat. It got us totally out of the comfort zone, going for practically no yoga experience to 4 hours a day during the retreat was overwhelming at first but we look back fondly. If you often steer clear of adrenaline maybe consider going to one of the many Surf Resorts around the world. Maybe you always book that cosy city hotel and staying in the middle of the jungle wouldn’t be your first option but we say why not.

Unplug

Back in 2015 we took a month off the internet in the middle of the Swedish wilderness. No email, no Facebook, no WhatsApp, just us and the Dutch family we were volunteering for. We learnt a lot that month and came up with some of our best ideas. We would advise you to Take the opportunity to unplug, and try to stay tech-free as much as you possibly can on your next trip.

Pace Yourself

Now that some restrictions have been lifted and normality slowly returns to the world, it is tempting to dive in and go crazy, traveling as much as possible while you have the chance. The thing is, this is not necessarily the right approach to take, and you could well burn yourself out as a result. This is why it is so important to pace yourself and ease your way back into the travel process once more. Perhaps a staycation first, followed by a mini trip abroad would be the ideal approach. Then, when you’re back in the groove, you can start looking at some of the best ways of being able to travel again more frequently.

Choose Your Travel Partner Wisely

Something else to consider is who you are going to be traveling with. If you’re already married and you have no choice, well, then we feel for you. We also stuck with each other but at the end of the day it’s not as bad it it seems 😉 We fortunately enjoy the same activities but

we’ve been in many situations where our travel partners don’t end up enjoying what we do. That’s normal, but it’s important that they are open to compromise and you should be open to it too.

Learn a Bit of the Language

We all know English is so widely spoken but making an effort with the locals if always appreciated. We use Duolingo heaps, right now we are currently learning Portuguese and before that we did a stint of German as Stevo has family in Austria. Knowing just a bit of the language really goes a long way and it’s helped us meet more locals when traveling.

There are so many ways of being able to get that travel bug back again and we hope this sparked off a few ideas.
