A Day In Venice, Italy

A Day In Venice, Italy

Different from our usual just-the-two-of-us trips, we recently took the Topdeck Travel Trail to the Alps tour, for a group travel experience of a lifetime. 18 days, 8 countries, 14 cities, and a group of 29 strangers who have proven that the best part of travel is the people you meet along the way.

The next city on our Trail to the Alps tour was Venice.

There are few cities in this world that possess as much charm and character, as Venezia. Everything from the Venetian Gothic architecture, the ornate bridges (of which there are 409), and the mysterious tiny streets (which you will definitely get lost in), to the enchanting masks found at almost every corner, and the cute pasticcerias selling delectable Nutella-covered everythings. You’ll walk around aimlessly, getting lost in the beauty; but it won’t bother you at all, because every step you take in this city will leave you feeling like you are exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Sadly we were only able to spend a day meandering through Venice’s old town during our Topdeck tour, but we definitely got a taste that has left us slightly addicted. We arrived by bus from the mainland (nice and early to avoid the big crowds), and walked from the major bus stop, crossing over the Accademia bridge, through many cobbled alleys, to land up at St Mark’s square, where, these days, the pigeons are no longer dominating the piazza.

During our mandatory-when-in-Venice gondola ride, we cruised past the Rialto bridge (which was sadly covered with maintenance plaster and advertising billboards), and landed up on the main pier, where we strolled past hundreds of gondolas that were gently swaying on the waves.

Steve has admitted (with his love for anything surrounded by water) that Venice is one of his favourite European cities, so pretty Venezia, we will definitely see you again.
