21 Aug Why The Canon EOS RP Is Perfect For Travel Photography
We left on our journey almost 5 years ago. It started as a sabbatical, but as our two-person travelling agency gained clients, and we continued clocking up more kilometres, it grew into a lifestyle. Not only has the way we travel changed – our camera gear has changed too (you guys might remember when we dropped one of our cameras in a huge puddle in Italy?) Well, as we travel with our life in four bags, it’s key for us to get the most out of the equipment we have (since we can’t really bring everything we want). Enter the Canon EOS RP mirrorless system.
Please note: this is less of a technical post, but rather an opinion piece on why we feel you should consider buying into Canon’s mirrorless system, especially if you’re looking for a light camera with quality performance. WHY THE CANON EOS RP IS GREAT FOR TRAVEL
First off, it’s small and light. This is invaluable for us. We’ve always said that no matter what size bag you bring, you will always fill it up, and with our medium-sized camera bags, the Canon EOS RP takes up the perfect amount of room. Weighing just 485 grams, this ultra-compact setup won’t tip your “carry-on” over the scales when flying either, so it’s a double bonus – small AND light.
It fits well into your hand. This might not seem like a big deal, but when you’re shooting at the back of a Tuk Tuk in Cambodia…in 35 degree Centigrade weather…with 80% humidity…your sweaty hands need a comfy and reliable grip. Well, the Canon EOS RP has that.
The image quality is insanely good. If the 26.2 full-frame CMOS sensor is enough to capture all the details on the Santa Maria Novella Cathedral (seen below), then it will be enough for any travel situation. It’s good to note that the Canon EOS RP has the same full-frame sensor as the Canon 6D Mark II, so you’ll get the same detailed quality of a top-notch Canon DSLR, with less of the bulk. Pretty great for a travel photographer.
The new RF lenses are magic. Canon has put a lot of technology into the new RF-mount lenses, and it shows. The lens we use most is the 35mm f1.8 Macro IS STM, and it has been incredible for portraiture and general street photography, as it gives you a wide, yet natural perspective. The 35mm is particularly light, and has to be our favorite combo with the EOS RP. Also, if you’re like us and have been using Canon for many years, then you will be pleased to know that an additional adapter is available, which will allow you to use all the EF-mount lenses you’ve collected over the years – so you’re getting a mirrorless set-up with your full collection of lenses. Yup, it’s amazing.
The video is surprisingly good…especially with the buttery 35mm f1.8 Macro IS STM attached. The video is extremely smooth, and we’ve had no problem producing creative travel videos for our social media channels with it. Just make sure to keep the Stabilizer switched on on your lens (as we made that mistake the first week, and the footage was a little shakier than we’d hoped).
THE PROOF IS IN THE (PHOTOGRAPHIC) PUDDING
Ok, enough chit-chat from us – let us show you why this camera is the perfect travel partner. Below you’ll see some of the images we’ve managed to capture whilst shooting with the Canon EOS RP in the last few months. We’d love to hear your thoughts, so pop ’em in the comments!
