22 Apr 9 Awesome Things You Can Do On Your Malta Getaway
If you are planning a trip to this beautiful island, kudos to you! You are guaranteed to find dozens of fun things to do in Malta (trust us, it’s a real European gem and we cannot wait to go back). Whether you are a hardcore foodie looking to enrich your palate’s experience; a party animal wanting to discover the hidden depths of the Maltese underground music scene; a culture-vulture, seeking to explore Malta’s incredibly diverse and rich history; or just want to find the perfect place to enjoy the magnificent, beautiful outdoors – Malta will offer you all of that, and more.
In this quick guide, we will share with you nine awesome things you can do in Malta.
Eat at a Pastizzeria
The ‘pastizzi’ is a Maltese snack made of either seasoned peas or ricotta cheese, in a puff pastry pocket, glazed with some oil. Ok they’re not vegan, but when in Malta right? They are baked and served with a glass of tea, normally doused with condensed milk. Some people, however, prefer to enjoy it with a Kinnie – a local fizzy drink flavoured with oranges and local herbs. You can find pastizerrias in pretty much every town and village, so there’s really no excuse.
Experience Valletta, the Capital of Malta
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the walled city of Valletta is considered to be the historic capital of Malta. Don’t get the wrong idea, though. Before you skip on to the next adventure, Valletta is actually a must-visit when you’re in Malta (even if historic travel isn’t really your thing). The city hosts some exciting nightlife options, like rooftop cocktail bars, glamorous bistros, and fun whiskey bars that are its best kept secret. Why do you think it has its own section in this magical city? To truly understand what a gem it is, check out this article from Choice Holidays entitled 9 things to do in Valletta to capture the spectacular beauty of the city and then decide for yourself. It is really the nightlife-loving person’s partying spot, and the history-lover’s haven, all rolled into one. When arriving at Malta’s main airport, you can book a transport service from Jayride to drop you off anywhere on the island – whether you’re there to party or brush up on your history knowledge.
Have a Beach Day at Mellieha
As one of the largest villages in Malta, Mellieha overlooks Ghadira Bay, the country’s largest sandy beach, perfect for a chill day of tanning.
Visit Gozo and Comino
You guys know we love Gozo as we spent an entire month there in 2018, so we simply have to say that these sister mini-islands are a real treat, and a must-visit when venturing to Malta. Gozo is beautiful, with its bright blue skies and crystal-clear water, unique coastal landscape, and pure countryside, while Comino’s Blue Lagoon and hidden caves are the perfect way to end off your island-hopping excursion (we recommend seeing this one by kayak).
Check out Mdina
No cars are allowed in this small, gorgeous pedestrian city, with its magnificent cathedrals and that famous Mdina glass. It’s also worth mentioning that at night it looks absolutely breathtaking, so try to spend a night (or ten) here if you can.
Visit Marsaxlokk on a Sunday
This little village is located in the south of the island, and every Sunday there is a market selling organic local produce, and Maltese beverages and delicacies. The village itself is also so picturesque, and with the fresh, healthy, and scrumptious food for sale, it’s a no-brainer.
Shop at ‘The Point’
If shopping is your thing, check out The Point in Mdina, as it is actually the biggest shopping mall on the island, carrying an impressive variety of outlets that satisfy all tastes.
Rediscover the Outdoors
Malta is mind-blowingly beautiful – from its dramatic coastline, idyllic beaches, and its gorgeous countryside, there are definitely plenty of things to see and do if you’re into outdoor adventures like diving and rock climbing.
Have Cake at Fontanella
Who doesn’t love cake? Um, no, we cannot hear you, strange person saying, “Me”. Ok, even if it’s not your guilty pleasure of choice, this is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing, and a real bucket list item for Malta. The pastries and cakes at Fontanella have been labelled as some of the “finest and most delicious on Earth”, so they certainly shouldn’t be missed.
As you may have figured, Malta is an awesome place that holds something for everyone, no matter what you’re into. So, plan well, and take this list along to guide you through an unforgettable Malta experience.
