The Charm Of Fall Foliage In Vermont

If you’ve ever wondered what time of year to visit Vermont, let us come right out and say that it HAS to be Autumn. The white steeples of the chapels and churches are popping in the charming towns of Manchester and Burlington, in perfect contrast to the nature show of burnt orange and red. The temperature is dropping, coating the Green Mountains with blankets of fog. Wafts of apple cider and maple syrup (ALL the maple syrup) fill the air around the cute stops on the side of the road (which are all dressed up for the Halloween festivities). Does it get any more quaint (or picturesque) than that?

Renting a car should be mandatory, because there’s really no better way to explore the lush forests and sleepy country lanes. We got ourselves a Jeep, and headed up through Massachusetts from New York. This was our first time in New England (the scenic region of North-East America) and we quickly learned how different this part of the country is. There’s no bustle or traffic (like that in the big city), no glam or bright lights…just pure nature hugging all the small towns. You feel that sense of relaxation and escapism almost instantly.

We made our stop at the Equinox Luxury Collection Resort (our home for the next few days) and after checking out the fire pit, spa, bar, and our room (or shall I say ‘our house’), we ventured into the town for a little exploration. We visited Hildene (the Lincoln family home, built by Abraham Lincoln’s son Robert back in 1905), and Stevo drooled a little when we went to the Orvis fly fishing store and American Museum of Fly Fishing (in case you aren’t aware, Stevo grew up fly fishing with his family on the lakes of the Drakensberg, South Africa, so coming to what can be considered the Mecca of fly fishing was kind of a big deal for him). Inspired by the museum and store (and feeling as hopeful as ever) Stevo hit the Equinox Resort’s lake (or as they called it, “the Equinox pond”) and cast his rod a few times. We didn’t have too much time, so no fish were caught (either that, or my Vegan Voodoo was at play again, haha), and we moved along to the Land Rover Experience (filled with lots of petrol head jargon) it gave us the chance to learn how to handle a car of that magnitude on some hairy terrain. Let’s just say, Jeremey and the boys would’ve been proud.

Our first evening was spent learning how to make s’mores (if you missed our InstaStory, you can watch it in the VERMONT bubble in our profile), and relaxing by the crackling fire of our cosy house. Vermont kind of stole our heart at that point.

More adventures continued during our visit, as we rented canoes, visited the Falconry school, and ate some delectable dishes at the Resort’s restaurants. I quickly snuck into the marimekko store in town (don’t think I mentioned it yet, but there are some superb shops in the town of Manchester, so ladies FYI: while your men are golfing on the Resort’s course, there’s plenty for you to see too…and yes, I’ve been obsessed with the marimekko brand ever since our trip to Helsinki). Then off we went back to NYC.

Vermont – you were delightful, charming, and oh so pretty. I know Steve loved your ruggedness and we both thoroughly enjoyed the nature show. Hope you’ll have us again one day.
