The Most Important Piece Of Technology We Own

We often get Instagram DMs from fellow travellers (or not-yet-traveling peers) who ask us about our cameras, our kits, and what equipment we use when hopping between countries, four bags in tow. We’ll normally respond with a very detailed message, explaining the camera equipment we’ve chosen to upgrade to, the lenses we now have in our artillery, and the apps we’ve purchased for our laptops…but we don’t often mention our iPhones, and today’s post will be entirely dedicated to this – the most important piece of technology we own.

As two full-time traveling creatives (who quit their ad jobs back in early 2015), we cannot stress enough how our phones are our lifelines. We use them to create – often designing intricate typography layouts for our InstaStories, doing final touch-up edits to our photos going live on Instagram, and the number of blog posts we’ve written using only our phones and our thumbs (just like this one) – countless!

We use our phones to connect* – with family on all four corners of the world (hey fam in Poland, South Africa, Austria, and Australia!), with friends who are either back home, or also venturing around in the nomadic way we do, and with clients who we mostly haven’t met and only know from an email address or Instagram handle.

*Of course without an active SIM card, like the one we have from Three (which let’s us roam through Europe easily and without any additional fees) we wouldn’t be so connected…so yay for 4G too!

We use our phones to organise our lives – from searching-for and booking flights, hotels, long-term apartments, trains, and buses, to finding restaurants / post offices / doctors / and bars “near me”. Our ebooks, boarding passes, photos, calendar, notes, to-do lists and music library are all stored on them. It’s really quite crazy when you stop to think about it.

The humble phone doesn’t get enough time in the limelight. Everyone’s always preaching about the latest drone model, or what new features the latest version of Lightroom offers, but we must not forget that we run a traveling creative agency (from anywhere we are in the world) all from the power of our mobile devices. Let’s give them phones a quiet clap, shall we?

As a full-time traveler, my life’s goals revolve around carrying less stuff – it was liberating when we first jet-setted, leaving nothing behind, and I’m still liberated before every big trip if I know I have a few kilos to spare, and space in both my bags (I can vouch for Stevo here and say his goals are pretty similar). And in a world where content is king, and we’re required (professionally) to have the required equipment for hotel shoots, and wow-factor content, we often forget that “the best camera is the one you have on you” – 99% of the time, it’s the one built into our mobile devices.

So in summary, I’d like to say that my iPhone 8 Plus is by far the most precious piece of cargo I own, and I cannot imagine a world without it (ok, unless I’m intentionally trying to take a break and unplug, like that time in Sweden). If you want to know more about the equipment we use, send us a DM and we’ll be happy to share 🙂 but for now we’re letting the phone have its moment.
