27 Oct A Day At Taronga Zoo In Sydney, Australia
Our motto and motivation is to “collect experiences, not things”. Whilst on our journey, we’re aiming to spend our time and money on spectacular experiences, to be left with incredible learnings and memories, not tangible objects. This way, we’re sure to keep our lives light without additional luggage, but also be the change we want to see in the world. Our next featured experience is a day at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney.
Place us in an exotic area, with nothing to do but spot wildlife, and you’ll have us occupied for hours. Quite literally six amazing hours, which we spent running around in the rain like a couple of wellington-adorned toddlers, spotting every possible animal we could have dreamed of. Taronga Zoo could possibly be the best zoo in the world. Ok, ok, we’ve only been to two other zoos (in Salzburg during our visit earlier this year, and in our own native Johannesburg zoo), but from the moment we walked in, it honestly felt like we had reached the big time.
Everything from the authentic Australian walkabout where we could spot Kangaroos and spy on Emus, and the encounter with the sleep-for-20-hours-a-day-because-they-can Koalas (which had us tick off number 37 from our Wanderlist “Take a snap with a Koala”), to the jaw-dropping spectacle at the Seal Theatre (never thought I’d see a seal impersonate a shark, but wow I’m glad I got to see it) and perfectly-timed tricks at the Bird show. Our trip to Taronga Zoo was everything we hoped it would be.
Sure, the weather could’ve been better, and the Sky Safari cable car we took from the bottom to the top probably wouldn’t have wobbled so much in the storm that felt like Katrina’s sister hurricane, but there was something quite magical about walking through the tropical pathways in the wetness. For one, there were less people, so we had a lot of one-on-one opportunities with the various furries, but we were also able to experience what I can imagine a tropical rainforest would be like…with a gorgeous view of Sydney’s iconic skyline, of course.
Thank you Taronga Zoo and all 4000 inhabitants. You’re a special place with an incredible mission. If we lived in Sydney, you would see us every weekend, no matter what the weather (but whilst we travel, you will have us following your Instagram page daily instead).

Posted at 07:27h, 28 OctoberHey guys!
Lovely post, as usual. I haven’t been to a zoo in AGES…I think reading this post has awoken the animal in me, haha. So Chanel, as I understand, you do all of the writing and Steve clicks all the photos? If that’s the case then please tell him that this is a brilliant photoshoot! I especially like the picture of the three scaly looking birds, the backside gorilla shot and the one with the lazy koala and sign. The rest of them are ace too, but those are my favourites. Happy days 🙂
