    Turkey / 06.10.2015

When you hear from friends back home, and they say they're going to be nearby, of course you make a plan to drop everything and head off to meet them! Such was the case with our trip to Istanbul, where we managed to see some of our favourite people, who had all planned to visit Turkey for a sailing-slash-exploration trip. Originally, we didn't realise we'd be stuffing our faces with honey-pistachio-cranberry-pomegranate-Turkish-delight amazingness so soon into our trip, but wow, we're sure glad we did! Our eventful few days began with a tour of Istiklal Avenue in Taksim, the busiest street in the new part of town, surrounded by buildings highly influenced by the Ottoman era. Besides the almost-too-large crowd of 3 million people...

One of the joys of using a service like Workaway to travel, is having the ability to explore the area you're staying in, including nearby towns and villages. During our recent month staying with our new friends Michele and Laura, volunteering at The Pet's Academy (where we learnt about dog psychology and pet training), we managed to squeeze in a quick trip to the nearby student town, Perugia. This little Umbrian gem is home to some of the most beautiful Italian structures, with hints of Etruscan, Medieval and Renaissance influences seen throughout the city. I was also VERY happy to discover that my childhood love, Baci (the small round Italian chocolates wrapped in the iconic silver and blue wrapping) originate from Perugia, making...

Our motto and motivation is to "collect experiences, not things". Whilst on our journey, we're aiming to spend our time and money on spectacular experiences, to be left with incredible learnings and memories, not tangible objects. This way, we're sure to keep our lives light without additional luggage, but also be the change we want to see in the world. Our second featured experience is a vintage Fiat 500 panoramic tour of Florence. Have you ever dreamed of cruising through Tuscan hills, passing ancient villas, and stopping only to take panoramic photographs of the beautiful city of Florence, all whilst enjoying the Mediterranean sun through the sunroof of an iconic Fiat 500? Well if you hadn't until now, you probably will tonight. It's...

Having spent just three short days in this magical town, I can now totally relate to my mom's dream of visiting Florence. It's as special and romantic as the clichés make it out to be, and I would honestly spend all my Autumns here if I could. We first arrived in Florence (en route to our next Workaway), stopping for just one night to breathe in some fresh Tuscan air (and to eat big cheesy pizzas and mouth-watering gelatos, obviously!) What soon followed, was a we-got-lost-and-loved-it tour of the city centre, stopping at the grand Il Duomo di Firenze (holy hell this is a GORGEOUS creation), crossing the unique structure of Ponte Vecchio, and ending up at Piazzale Michelangelo to view...

    Greece / 15.09.2015

Our belief to say "yes" to everything was once again put to the test when we arrived in Athens. We, by chance, bumped into our friends Bernie & Anthi aka Mr & Mrs Smit, who were staying a mere 1.8km away from us (still can't believe our luck) and before we knew it, we were agreeing to a Greek wedding invitation. Crazy! Fireworks, beautiful bride and groom arriving on a boat (we even got the bride to hold our board), and partying 'til sunrise on the beach was exactly what our big, fat Greek wedding experience gave us. We learned to dance the Kalamatiano, and snacked on loukoumades (the sweetest little Greek doughnuts; I believe the recipe will be on the Mr...

Whilst on our journey, we're aiming to spend our time and money on spectacular experiences, to be left with incredible learnings and memories, not tangible objects. This way, we're sure to keep our lives light without additional luggage, but also be the change we want to see in the world. Our first featured experience is a Greek cooking class at Katarina's Couzina. Baked octopus, creamy Moussaka, and sweet Baklava. These were just a few of the traditional Greek dishes we learned to make at our new friend, Katarina's Greek cooking class during our recent visit to Poros. Upon arrival, we were treated to chilled wine and Briami (Greek oven-roasted vegetables), whilst the head...

After being gone exactly 6 months, I feel it necessary we share the uglier side of our trip. Browsing through our blog posts and Instagram feed, it seems like we're having the time of our lives. And don't get me wrong – we are. It's bloody amazing. But it's not all ice-creams in the sun and pretty landscapes. Noooooo. So far, I think we've tallied 135 toilets scrubbed, 250 kilos of cow dung spread, 2 tons of rocks shovelled, 60 metres of pathway laid, 57 beds made, and I cannot even remember how many wine glasses we've polished. You see, to come from the luxuries we left behind in Johannesburg, to the brutal truth of volunteer work, we are now on the opposite end...

    Greece / 26.08.2015

I recall waking up at 6am to the sound of cicadas on a nearby island. Opening my eyes, I saw perfectly blue skies, and felt morning dew on my feet. I looked over at Stevo lying next to me, and realized that we had just spent our first night on a sailing boat, drifting gently to the wake of the Aegean Sea. This was the first of four nights we would spend on Naziara, the floating vessel we would temporarily call home. In an attempt to tick off number 7 from our Wanderlist, (sail through the Greek isles), we visited our friends from Live-Bio to enjoy three beautiful weeks exploring the Peloponnese. From 40 degree walks through olive groves, and sunset yoga classes on the...

We’re so lucky to be meeting some amazing people on our journey. When we first planned our trip, it was all about the places and experiences. We’re quickly realizing that it’s the people that make the places more memorable, and really make the experiences. Our second featured friend(s) are Magdalena and Periklis of Live-Bio. Have you ever met a person (or people) who somehow stumbled into your life by chance, but you are really, REALLY glad they did? Enter Mags and Periklis, the founders of Live-Bio, our hosts in Greece, and our friends who we met serendipitously at the end of last year. Having only had two (delicious and home-made) dinners in Johannesburg together, but very similar ideologies about how our limited time...

    Austria / 19.08.2015

After spending 10 weeks in Scandinavia, exploring Oslo, looking after puppies in Alta, road tripping through southern Norway, renting bikes in Copenhagen, spotting moose in Kallsedet, and getting lost in Stockholm, our travels brought us back to Austria, to tick off number 6 from our Wanderlist: Go down the wooden slide in Hallstatt. We visited Austria earlier this year, and we could have slipped a Hallstatt visit into the itinerary then, but after seeing this charming sunny village nestled in the Austrian Alps, and swimming in the crystal blue water of Lake Hallstatt, we are sooooo glad we chose to wait for Summer. Arriving at 6am proved to be the best decision, as we were able to see the views with gentle sunrise lighting, and...
