Different from our usual just-the-two-of-us trips, we recently took the Topdeck Travel Trail to the Alps tour, for a group travel experience of a lifetime. 18 days, 8 countries, 14 cities, and a group of 29 strangers who have proven that the best part of travel is the people you meet along the way.

The next city on our Trail to the Alps tour was Rome.

Rome is way bigger, way more energetic, and way cooler than I thought. Seriously. Stevo might not agree with this, but I could move to Rome tomorrow. I love Italy more than most countries (I might be biased as I have some Italian in my family line) so it was great to find a city that had the Italian flare, but also big city energy.

We arrived in the Italian capital late in the afternoon, after stopping past the quaint town of Orvieto, during our seven-day trip through Italy. After checking in to our hotel, we caught the fairly-simple-to-navigate metro, to land up at the infamous Spanish Steps (which sadly were covered due to maintenance) and began our Topdeck walking tour from there. We stopped at all the major spots – the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona (which had some really cool street artists doing their thing with spray paint and canvases), but my favourite stop had to be at La Fontana Di Trevi a.k.a the Trevi Fountain. Wow it’s a beautiful creation. And lucky for us, it had just been revealed after nearly 18 months of maintenance, so we got to see her in all her glory. As true romantics, we threw some coins over our left shoulders, then moved on for a Roman dinner, and gelato from Della Palma, which, you must know, has over 150 gelato flavours. No, I am not kidding. Even vegan soya gelato (although I wasn’t wowed by it, and much preferred the original cow milk versions, especially the Ferrero Raffaello flavour – though my body’s dairy allergy did not agree with my choice).

The following day, Stevo and I enjoyed our free time and went on our own walking tour along the Tiber River, getting lost along the way and finding a pasticceria which, in my opinion, sells the best pastries in Europe (of course I haven’t been to them all though…yet). Imagine a crispy phyllo cannelloni, filled with an egg nog custard, and dusted with powdered sugar. I feel that my quest to find the tastiest pastry in the world is complete – Cafe Trastevere, you have my heart.
