15 Jun 5 Reasons Why Barcelona Is Europe’s Finest City
Ah, Barcelona. Where do I even begin?! What a truly sensational town (and definitely in our top 5 favorite cities). Let me tell you why…
Reason #1 – It’s the most spacious European city we’ve ever visited
The wide roads, the open parks, the beach, the nearby mountains – although a hugely populated city (Spain’s second largest) you don’t feel the congestion at all. I’m not sure if it was the way the original town was planned, or how the man-made structures were interweaved between the beautiful outdoor scenery, but even walking through the busy tourist-infested alleys, you feel like you have your own space, and enough of it to breathe and take it all in (unlike many other European cities).
Reason # 2 – It’s the perfect mix of old and new
Even when arriving at Barcelona El Prat airport, the two prominent structures – the Sagrada La Familia and the Torre Agbar – give you an impression that this city is completely open to innovation, but also holds cultural integrity. We loved the juxtaposition of modern design with Catalan Art Nouveau and, of course, Gaudí’s visions, which leads us onto reason number 3…
Reason #3 – One person’s creativity is synonymous with the entire city
As you may or may not know, we are ambassadors for creativity. Even if no “official badge” has been given to us, we will preach until the Bulls come home, that creativity solves every problem, and creativity is the most notable thing that we, as humans, have that’s superior to all other beings. With that being said, we are beyond ecstatic when an entire city honors and revolves around an artist, namely Mr Antoni Gaudí. His pieces are seen in various parts of the city, and the flamboyant playfulness of them adds to the Barcelonian energy.
Reason #4 – You will see, hear, smell, taste and feel the color
Barcelona is vibrant no matter how you experience it. The beautiful La Boqueria market, the friendly people, the bikinis seen on the beaches, the boats cruising into the harbor, the buffets and fruit cups and floral bouquets, La Rambla, the parks, the beach bars, the paella, the street art, and buildings and shopping alleys. It’s all bursting with bright color, and will make your visit unforgettable, no matter what time you of year you go.
Reason # 5 – It leaves you feeling like a new person (and one that needs to book a trip back)
Of the (plus minus) 12 have-visited-Barcelona-before friends, who we told that we were heading to Barcelona, all 12 said it was one of their favorite places to go and we would absolutely love it. We don’t normally enjoy hearing much about a place before going, as it sets a certain expectation and then we build it up too much, but in Barcelona’s case, the opposite can be said – I don’t think our friends built it up enough!
Thank you Barcelona – you were truly magical in every way. We can’t wait to come back.
