14 May Family Road Trip Adventure In South Africa
Embarking on a family road trip through South Africa’s captivating Waterberg region was an absolute delight, and something the frequent readers will know that we love to do. Tucked away in the heart of the Limpopo province, just a few hours from Johannesburg (our old home), this stunning landscape boasts rugged mountains, lush valleys, and an abundance of wildlife, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike.
Our journey began by picking up our fully-equipped 4×4 camper from Drive South Africa (since we had to leave #TheBadger.🚐 back up north in Prague) With everything we needed for a week of wilderness camping – including two rooftop tents (just in case we needed separate accommodations after a road trip disagreement 😂), a spacious fridge, a freezer (for all of Elodie’s precooked meals), and all the cooking essentials – we were ready for our adventure.
Our first stop was the renowned Dinokeng Game Reserve, home to the Big Five, spanning over 18,500 hectares of pristine wilderness, and malaria-free (unlike Kruger National Park). It was here that we had the joy of introducing Elodie to some of her favourite animals for the very first time. From majestic elephants and graceful giraffes to dazzling zebras, the reserve offered unforgettable wildlife encounters that left us in awe. And of course, Ellie’s excitement knew no bounds when she spotted a giraffe – she has a stuffed giraffe named Gigi that she absolutely loves, so seeing “Gigi’s cousins” was pure magic.
Continuing our family road trip northward, we passed through Bella Bella, and arrived at the tranquil Nylsvley Nature Reserve. Known as a haven for birdwatchers (and you know we love birds), this hidden gem never fails to enchant with its breathtaking scenery, and diverse flora and fauna. Camping in the midst of nature for three nights, completely off the grid with no electricity or hot water, allowed us to truly immerse ourselves in the serenity of the wilderness. You need to bring everything into the park to keep you going as there are no shops nearby, so this is where planning ahead as new parents was really put to the test…luckily we did good, and Elodie absolutely loved it. We highly recommend going here if you love nature and just want some peace and quiet.
Although our week-long family road-trip eventually came to an end as we reluctantly returned to Johannesburg, the memories we made will stay with us forever. And with plans already in the works for our next adventure, we can’t wait to hit the road again soon!
