24 Mar Travel’s Most Celebrated Art Form: Architecture (India Edition)
Let me begin by saying that we are not ‘architecture specialists’. The closest that we can relate to the subject, is that all three of my grandfathers were architects, and my parents wanted me to become an architect (sorry Mom & Dad!)…oh, and Stevo’s sister-in-law (and my future sister-in-law) is an architect.
That’s about it.
We don’t understand the process, or know the various styles that have evolved over time (yes, we’ve heard many speak of “art nouveau structures” and “medieval” or “romanesque” influence during some of our travels) but we’ve never really delved into the detail of it all.
What we can, however, appreciate from architecture, is how, in the context of travel, it is one of the most celebrated art forms. If you think about how many people travel to Italy just to see the Colosseum and (the unfortunate architectural mishap of) the leaning tower of Pisa; and how the Sagrada Familia (yet to be finished) and Park Güell, are the main attractions in Barcelona; and (one last example, because I could go on and on here), how New York’s Flatiron, Empire State and Chrysler buildings will forever remain iconic symbols of the Big Apple. The practice of designing and constructing buildings (as states the definition of architecture) is one of (if not the most) celebrated art forms. Hundreds of thousands of travellers each year, admire these creations and appreciate the visions of the creators, not only because each style and each building preserves a historical time, but because architecture is a purely creative form of expression, just like painting, photography, and dance.
With all that being said, my apologies for the lack of “facts” and “architecture-specialist critique” here – we merely wanted to celebrate the beauty of the creations we saw during our #DestinationDiscoveries trip through India, in the best way we knew how: photography. Hope you enjoy the series!
