Black Lives Matter Movement Through Art | How Far From Home

#BlackLivesMatter Through Art

This past week has been monumental, as people all over the world have been fighting for equality through the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

We’ve always been driven to create and express ourselves through art. More often than not, it is art that portrays our thoughts better than anything else, so with that in mind, we wanted to support the movement by sharing some of the most moving pieces of art we’ve seen created in the last week.

Here are some of the most powerful and thought provoking pieces of #BlackLivesMatter art we’ve seen

READ THIS CAPTION—it is important💛 In the last few days, I have gotten probably 200 messages from people asking my thoughts on the current response to the killing of George Floyd. And my answer has always been: people are angry. people are sad. people are traumatized. TRAUMA drives this response. Nobody really WANTS violence. Violence is not okay. I don’t “agree with” violence. I mean, does anyone? This being said, it is not our choice as white people to judge the way an oppressed group decides to protest. I’m hearing a lot of “okay but, peaceful protesting is the answer.” Do y’all remember the response and outrage when Colin Kaepernick took a peaceful knee? I’m not saying any of this to be incendiary. I want people to really take a moment, and think. Check yourself. It might be hard for us as white people to understand why something like this happens, but that in and of itself is another example of privilege—we have the privilege of never having been in a position where we have felt so oppressed and unheard that violence feels like the only answer. Please just sit with this. Just sit. Breathe. Understand the position of privilege you are in to NOT ever have to resort to violence.• • • • • #blacklivesmatter #blacklivesmatterart #whiteprivilege #privilegeart #whiteprivilegeisreal #blm #blacklivesmatter✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 #georgefloyd #justiceforgeorgefloyd #justiceforfloyd #activism #socialactivism #activistart

I’ve written and deleted and re-written a post over and over for the last few days about what happened to George Floyd in Minnesota a few days ago. Seems like the words just ring hollow and don’t come out right. I guess there’s a fear of coming across insincere or “band-wagon-y”, or of saying the wrong thing or of backlash or any combination of the above. So I sat down today to instead create something. Tara’s so good about jumping right in and using her voice and standing up for what is right— but it’s taken me a minute. . George Floyd isn’t a just hashtag or a slogan. He isn’t a headline or a cause— he was a human. A man. A son, a father and a friend. He was a person with a story and a soul, and he should have been a man with a future. But that future was stolen by another man— a white man empowered by a systematic enabling of brutality and force. A public servant charged with the responsibility to protect people, who instead became the face of yet another senseless murder of a black man in America at the hands of the police. . Tara and I watched the video of George’s murder, sick to our stomachs but refusing to look away. We can’t look away anymore. We can’t stand by or stay silent, waiting for someone else to do something. Afterall, strength is for service, not status, right? How can Tara and I call ourselves Christians and NOT act in the face of injustice? How can we say we love our neighbors and NOT speak for them when they have no voice? How can we sit idly by in silence when our fellow humans, particularly black Americans, are hurting and crying for help? . I know this isn’t a beautiful travel photo- it’s a group of black faces that have been killed at the hands of the police, most with no justice at all. And the gut-wrenching part is that it’s a drop in the bucket in a long history of racism and police brutality in America. . So, let’s act. Let’s show up. Our fellow humans, our black brothers and sisters need us. Use your voice. Share Floyd’s Story. Share Ahmaud’s story. Share Breonna’s story. Learn the stories you don’t know and share them. Knowledge is power and awareness is essential in bringing any change. Check our stories for some ways to help 🖤

🗣 ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! 🗣 If you aren’t angry about the deaths of #ahmaudarbery #breonnataylor #georgefloyd and countless other black men and women who have died at the hands of a racist, broken system, one of two things is true: 1. You either aren’t paying attention, or 2. You’re part of the problem. If you’re tired of hearing about racism or seeing us speak out against it, imagine how tired people are of experiencing it every. single. day. White and white-passing people: If you want to help but you’re not sure how, start by educating yourself. Knowledge is power. Then, check your privilege. Recognize that, even if your life has been hard, your skin color isn’t one of the things making it harder. And one more thing: stop saying, “I’m not racist because I don’t see color.” First of all, if you aren’t blind, that’s bullshit. Second, when you say you don’t see color, you’re ignoring racism while completely dismissing black history and culture. Stop doing that! See color, learn about it, celebrate it! To everyone hurting right now, I’m with you. I see you, and I’ll do everything I can to be part of the solution. I can promise you that. Sending so much love and light to you. 💖 Please feel free to share this in your posts and stories if you’re moved to do so. Just be sure to add an artist credit to the caption so others can find the original piece. Thank you! … … … Edit: Okay, let me be abundantly clear since some folks just don’t seem to get it. This is MY artwork, MY post, on MY profile. As such, I reserve the right to promptly delete any comments that spout nonsense, spread misinformation, or diminish IN ANY WAY the hurt and anger that many of us so rightly feel. By all means, have your opinion. But if you’ve come here to be nasty, you can see yourself out. … … … #blacklivesmatter #sayhisname #sayhername #saytheirnames
