17 Nov The Best Coffee Shops In Hermanus, South Africa
Just a quick 1.5 hour drive from Cape Town, the town of Hermanus offers a lot for those who take the time to stop by. Hermanus is famous for the Southern Right whales that visit it’s tranquil waters each year from the end of winter in July until late October.
Along with great views of these gentle giants, there are many outdoor activities one can do like hiking Fernkloof Nature Reserve and walking along the stunning Blue Flag Grotto beach. It also boasts some incredible restaurants and has a superb wine region to top it off.
But you’re here for coffee! South Africa is known for its great coffee culture, and with Cape Town being so close, Hermanus has some pressure to live up to it. We spent almost 2 years in this beautiful part of the world, and had a lot of time to frequent all the coffee spots. In no particular order these are my favourites (I’m leaving Chanel off this ranking since she doesn’t drink coffee – but enjoyed cake at almost all the spots, so I’ll ask her to maybe write a review about those too)..
(In order to keep things simple I had an Americano – Black at each spot. Shops were rated by ambience, staff politeness, and obviously coffee quality.)
Dal Italia
If you would like to be transported to Italy to have your coffee, then this is the place. With all Italian delicacies you could want, and even Italian radio playing in the background, it’s a great place to have a sit down coffee. Shoutout to the staff as well, who are really polite.
Black Medicine
Some of the tastiest coffee I tried, and the shop had really nice modern decor. The barristers were very knowledgeable, and they sell lots of different coffee paraphernalia on site. We also took a bag of freshly ground coffee back home from them which I would highly recommend.
Oskars
This place is an institution in Hermanus a.k.a. Hermies. Great quality coffee, delicious baked treats, and fresh bread can all be found here
The Deli Coffee Co.
Perfectly situated in the Whale Coast Mall so you can stop by after a shop. I had coffee from here a few times as it was really delicious, and the carrot cake was a real winner.
Grooves Cafe
Situated in the waterfront area with a great view over Walker Bay, this no-frill-just-good-coffee spot is a nice place to stop after having a meal in the area or ending your cliff path walk.
Tulip Coffee Roasting
A great little spot in town with delicious coffee and freshly baked bread. Pets are welcome, and it has a great vibe first thing in the morning.
Co.Unity Workspace
Primarily a co-working space, but it has a small coffee shop within it that sells little baked eats, and produces some great coffee. Good for on-the-go. Also make sure to pop into Daans Bakery on the opposite side of the road for Hermanus’ best freshly baked bread.
Lizettes
A great establishment with tasty food and a full bar. If you are heading to-and-from Grotto beach and need that caffeine fix, this is the one to go to.
