29 Jul A Few Reasons To Visit Malta
We were lucky enough to spend a whole month on Malta in May 2018. This incredible Island archipelago, which includes Malta, Comino and Gozo, has some of the best snorkelling and diving activities, stunning beaches, great nightlife, ancient temples (Roman ruins thrown into the mix) and much more to discover.
With so much love for these islands we thought we would share some of our best reasons to visit.
A Plethora Of Water Activities
Malta is probably the best place in Europe for scuba diving and snorkelling, with locations tha are suitable for the full range of skills, from beginner to experienced. Some of the best places for snorkelling include the famous Blue Hole in West Gozo, a 25-foot-deep hole that connects the sea eight feet below a submerged arch. For lovers of water activities, Malta is an absolute paradise.
For those apprehensive about exploring underwater it is probably the best place in Europe for entry level scuba diving and snorkelling, with locations suitable for the full range of skills, from beginner to experienced.
There are many interesting structures to be found under the surface of the water such as some World War II’s wrecks, like the HMS Maori, which rests 13 meters below Fort St Elmo in Valletta and the Bristol Beaufighter near St Julian’s at 33 meters. There are also more popular newer shipwrecks, such as the MV Cominoland ferry off the coast of Gozo, which collapsed in 2006, creating an artificial reef.
Some of the best places for snorkelling include San Dimitri Point in western Gozo, Wied il-Ghasri in northern Gozo which is a shallow waterway with stunning clarity and even some protected seahorses. Of course the famous Blue Hole in Gozo is a great place to spend the day snorkelling. On the main island, St Peter’s Pool – a natural pond-is a great spot to explore.
A Sailor’s Paradise
Malta has a great tradition of sailing as the conditions for most of the year allow you to hop on a boat and explore the islands. Ports like Msida and Ta’Xbiex, Mgarr in Gozo and The Grand Harbor marina in Valletta allow you to set off from various points along the archipelago.
Explore On Kayak
If your balance is good enough then Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are also great ways to explore the coast. Both can be hired at Xlendi in Gozo and Mellieha Bay in Malta. At the same time, you can enjoy windsurfing and kiteboarding all year round. Three of the best places for adrenaline-fueled water sports activities are Mellieha Bay, Bugibba Beach and Golden Bay.
The Pristine Beaches
Malta is full of beautiful beaches for you to spend your days soaking up the sun. Twelve of the island’s beaches have been awarded the coveted Blue Flag status by the Foundation for Environmental Education. Some of them are also rated as excellent for surfing, such as Ghajn Tuffieha, Golden Bay and Ghadira Bay.
The Hidden Coves And Coastlines
With its 200km of coastline Malta is full of incredible hidden coves. Some are know for creating a unique blue glow when you venture in them. One of the most amazing is the Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino. It was named so because the waters are of course incredibly turquoise. Other coves worth visiting include Ghar Lapsi in southeastern Malta, and the natural limestone gully – and Wied il-Ghasri in Gozo.
With all that being said having the freedom of a car is highly recommended to get around. We rented one for a week and it was more than enough time to check out all the great spots scattered around the islands.
By hiring a car for your travels in Malta, and trusting the Enjoy Travel company that is synonymous with reliability and safety, you will ensure your efficient journey throughout the country, especially in the coastline area where all these fantastic landscapes are located.
