6 Cities to Visit for Fun and Exciting Nightlife

Looking for the perfect city to dance till dawn, sip rooftop cocktails, or lose yourself in underground beats (like Chanel & Stevo used to do before they had Elodie)? From beachside bars to historic jazz clubs, here are six of the best cities in the world for nightlife, and why each one shines after dark.

6 Cities to Visit for Fun and Exciting Nightlife

Berlin, Germany

Berlin is the holy grail of nightlife for electronic music lovers. The legendary Berghain is a converted power station often considered the best club in the world, and notoriously hard to get into. Sisyphos is more accessible but equally iconic. It’s a quirky, all-weekend club with a festival vibe. KitKat is a sex-positive techno club famous for its uninhibited vibe.

Neighborhoods like Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain buzz with basement bars, queer clubs, and hidden venues. The crowd is diverse and inclusive…think techno heads, artists, and international creatives. Berlin also has one of the most liberal late-night scenes in Europe. Clubs often stay open for 24 hours, and late-night U-Bahn trains on weekends make getting around easy.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo’s nightlife is a kaleidoscope, with slick nightclubs, quirky venues and intimate hideaways packed into narrow alleys. In Shinjuku, Golden Gai is a must-visit. It’s a network of almost 300 tiny bars, and some seat only a handful of patrons. Each has its own theme, from punk or jazz to ‘80s film. Nearby Kabukicho offers glitzy host clubs and late-night ramen spots.

For clubbing, head to Womb in Shibuya or Vent in Omotesando, both famed for big-name DJs and high-tech production. The Roppongi area caters to a more international crowd, with expat-friendly venues. Tokyo has a reputation as a safe city too, as it’s the top vacation destination worldwide, but trains stop running around midnight, so plan ahead.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona’s nightlife starts late and ends later. Locals often don’t head out until midnight, and clubs go until dawn. Beachside clubs like Pacha and Opium in Barceloneta offer ocean breezes, international DJs and a fashionable crowd, especially in summer.

For a more alternative vibe, the sophisticated El Born district and its edgier neighbor, El Raval, are packed with indie bars, live music venues and flamenco shows. Sala Apolo in Poble Sec is a beloved venue hosting everything from reggaeton to techno, while Macarena Club offers an intimate techno experience in a tiny space. Barcelona has decent late-night metro service on weekends, but (as with any major city) pickpocketing can be an issue, so keep your bags zipped and valuables hidden away.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan buzzes with Caribbean flair after dark, from salsa-soaked streets to chic rooftops. In Old San Juan, La Factoria is a world-famous cocktail haven, offering multiple experiences from relaxed bars to hidden dance floors. Try out your moves at the regular live music salsa dancing night hosted by the Royal Sonesta San Juan hotel, or visit the graffiti-covered El Batey dive bar for boho charm and strong pours.

On the weekend, La Placita de Santurce explodes into a spectacle with locals dancing in the streets. For upscale vibes, head to the Condado district. Club Brava at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel draws stylish crowds, while beachfront spots offer sunset cocktails. Nightlife in San Juan is generally safe and welcoming to visitors.

New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

New Orleans dances to its own rhythm, with vibrant jazz clubs and historic venues at every turn. The famed French Quarter comes alive at night, with open-container laws allowing drinks from plastic containers as you wander down the street. Bourbon Street has a wild mix of dive bars and party vibes. Nearby in Frenchman Street, you will find venues like Snug Harbor, a classy jazz institution, along with bars offering everything from funk and blues to brass bands.

The vibe here is unpretentious, celebratory, and musical. Expect street performers and spontaneous dancing. Nightlife in New Orleans is mostly walkable, making for a magical nighttime playground.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town (Chanel & Stevo’s OG playground) also known as the Mother City’s nightlife is as diverse as its landscape. The East City district (especially Harrington Street) is a hot spot, with venues like Harrington’s Cocktail Lounge, SurfaRosa and District offering everything from Gatsby-esque art deco dining and themed dance nights to live indie gigs.

De Waterkant is the LGBTQ+ heart of the city, home to chic bars and drag performances in a colorful setting. For beachside glamor, head to Camps Bay, where venues like Cafe Caprice serve cocktails with ocean views. Cape Town’s nightlife is vibrant, but it’s smart to stay in well-lit areas and use rideshares for late-night travel.

Cheers Around the World

No matter your vibe, whether it’s elegant, wild, or somewhere in between, these six cities have something for everyone. There’s a city and plenty of venues out there with your name on it, so get ready to dance the night away!
