One night in Bangkok and the world’s your oyster.
The bars are temples but the pearls ain’t free.
You’ll find a God in every golden cloister,
And if you’re lucky then the God’s a she.

The famous Murray Head lyrics pretty much nailed it.

Our one night in Bangkok (after two six-hour flights and zero sleep) was a cracker. Yes, we ate fried crickets (see below) and yes, we raced around the crazy streets in a Tuk Tuk. Naturally. We were actually quite lucky to arrive at 9pm on a Saturday night, because this is the time you get to really feel this city’s addictive energy. If you’re not being offered ping pong shows (yup, those ones), or back, neck and shoulder massages, you’re getting sucked in to the scents of delicious street food – which we devoured in almost one bite.

The morning after our Khao-San-Road-and-surrounds exploration, we ventured out to see both the sitting and standing Buddhas, and experience the friendly nature of this city’s people. Lost and confused, we followed our gut and the pointing fingers of various passers by to make it through the busy city to the Skytrain, which we caught just in time to make our flight. Seems the Tuk Tuk drivers really do take you to stores in the middle of nowhere, expecting you to buy ridiculously-priced goods even if you’re not interested because they get a cut. Sorry Mr Tuk Tuk driver. We just weren’t that keen to buy gemstones, and we forgive you for leaving us in the middle of nowhere. It just added to our first-ever Asian adventure.
