29 Jul 3 Days In Copenhagen, Denmark
Ok, ok, we’re going to come right out and say it. Copenhagen is exactly what you think it is. It’s beautiful, charming, design-focused, filled with Neoclassical architecture, and its many streets, bridges and alleys are astutely arranged to be bike-friendly. It’s also the one city we’ve both been dying to see since, well, we can remember, so this was a special trip.
We arrived in the city two days before my 30th birthday, giving us enough time to familiarize ourselves with the hot spots (and our hostel, where we ended up counting down to the end of my twenties the next day). Our friend Ant flew in from London to join the celebrations, and once all three of us had a bike beneath our bums, we were cruising in the skinny lanes like locals.
The morning of my birthday (despite a rather large thirty-year-old hangover) was spectacular. Filled with calls from home and weather epitomising the middle of Summer, Stevo and I hopped on our bikes and soared through the city’s bustle to arrive at Noma, one minute before our scheduled reservation time.
The birthday lunch, in what was ranked as the world’s best restaurant in 2014, was the most nonpareil experience. Being welcomed by all the chefs upon arrival, getting seated by the friendliest Nomanian (my term for the people of Noma), nineteen courses of pure mouth-orgasms (if I must be frank), eating 150-year-old clam, baby pine shoots, lobster tail, and the best birthday cake my champagne-infused mouth could’ve asked for. Our lunch ended with a tour of the kitchen, where our love for food and fervour for innovation were treated to the most inspiring sight — forty young, talented, enthusiastic and ambitious food genies creating marveled creations in what can only be described as a food innovation lab. It was so much more than just a birthday lunch.
And what was exhibited so clearly for us at the Noma kitchen, is that no matter what happens, no matter where you end up, you should spend your hours and your time on earth, doing only that which you love. Because if you don’t, not only are you doing yourself an injustice — you might be denying the world of something spectacular too.
