Road Trip From Livingstone, Zambia

Road Trip From Livingstone, Zambia

Different from our usual just-the-two-of-us trips, we recently took a Topdeck Travel tour, for a group-travel experience of a lifetime. 21 days, 4 countries, 14 sleeping destinations, and a collection of 14 strangers who have proven that the best part of travel is the people you meet along the way.

The first country on our East African Explorer tour was Zambia.

Thick, luscious, green fields for miles; tropical and humid temperatures; friendly people with lovely faces. Our first impressions of Zambia immediately gear towards the outdoors – the beautiful, beautiful outdoors; and the people, whose welcoming nature made the first stop on our Topdeck trip a really special one.

We (naturally) started our Zambian adventure in Livingstone, with a visit to Victoria Falls – the world’s largest curtain of water. Although we’d seen the ‘Falls a few years back whilst trekking through Zimbabwe, we were once again totally blown away by the power of ‘the smoke that thunders’. Yes, we were drenched (and so was our camera bag) but on the bright side – we got to use our ponchos for the first time – ponchos we’d been carrying with us for over a year, so boom! We also walked under a rainbow, admired the famous Victoria Falls Bridge (which was sadly a failed attempt at creating a Cape Town to Cairo railway), and got our first proper taste of negotiations and bartering with the locals at the small market outside the entrance.

Our Zambian roadtrip continued over the next two days, as we headed north-east, passing through Lusaka and a cute campsite near Chipata which was filled with Zebras.

The final stop on our Zambian leg was the gorgeous South Luangwa National Park, home to over 460 types of wildlife and birds. Besides camping on the Luangwa River banks and enjoying the sounds of hippos and hyenas when falling asleep, we enjoyed an unforgettable four-hour-long game drive, awesome enough to have its own blog post 😉

Thank you Zambia – we had the best time, even in such a short few days. Hopefully we’ll cross your paths again someday.
