Hellooooooo Scandanavia. Gosh, you’re a pretty thing. And what a treat it was to start our Nordic trip with 12hrs in Oslo. Lucky for us, the 12hrs included one of the most gorgeous sunsets we’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing.
After checking in to one of our favourite Airbnbs (with rare-looking blue-eyed cats), we quickly grabbed the cameras and sped down through the city square towards the National Opera House. If anything, I would compare the architecture of this one-of-a-kind glass and stone spectacle, to something you would find created for a blockbuster like The Island. Textured walls that look like Braille, angled glass walls and shiny marble stairs you can climb to view Nordic fjords, the Atlantic, and the beautiful glass buildings in town.
Lucky for us, we passed through Oslo again on our way from Alta to Bergen, this time for 24hrs, leaving us with enough time to meander through the streets, and get a real feel for this modern, uplifting city. Round two welcomed us with another amazing Airbnb host, and a rainstorm, leaving us with only one option – umbrella-as-prop shots (obviously).
One thing we noticed about both our visits, was that it had felt most like home. Perhaps it was the slick architecture with globally known brands plastered on top, or the ease at which we could ask for anything in English. All of this packaged into a city that had modern designed buildings and only the latest cars parked on every corner.
We’re happy to say that if you’re only visiting Oslo for a short period of time, it’s small enough to explore by foot, but big enough to keep you coming back for more.
